Overview of the National Feed Industry Development in 2019
In 2019, influenced by factors such as declining hog production capacity and shifting international trade conditions, the national industrial feed industry experienced a drop in both output value and volume. At the same time, the industry accelerated its product structure adjustments, while feed additive products continued to grow steadily. Meanwhile, large-scale enterprises maintained an overall stable business environment.
I. Total Output Value of the Feed Industry
The total output value of the national feed industry reached 808.81 billion yuan, up from the same period last year. A 9.0% decrease ; Operating revenue reached 778.0 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 10.5%. Among these, the output value of feed products was 709.77 billion yuan, with operating revenue totaling 685.85 billion yuan—down 9.8% and 11.5%, respectively, compared to the previous year. The output value of feed additive products stood at 83.93 billion yuan, while operating revenue came in at 76.34 billion yuan, representing year-on-year declines of 12.4% and 13.4%, respectively. Meanwhile, the total output value of feed machinery was 4.78 billion yuan, with operating revenue reaching 6.05 billion yuan—a drop of 19.3% and 1.4%, respectively, compared to the same period last year. Pet feed products contributed an output value of 10.33 billion yuan and generated operating revenue of 9.76 billion yuan.
II. Total Output of Industrial Feed

Among these, feed for piglets, sows, and finishing pigs decreased by 39.2%, 24.5%, and 15.9%, respectively; while feed for laying hens totaled 31.166 million tons, up year-on-year. Increased by 9.6% Among these, feed for laying ducks and laying hens increased by 27.2% and 1.8%, respectively; feed for meat poultry totaled 84.648 million tons, up year-on-year. Pet feed production totaled 871,000 tons, a 10.8% rise compared to the previous year, while aquaculture feed stood at 22.029 million tons, representing a slight increase of 0.3% year-on-year. Other feed types amounted to 2.419 million tons, marking a robust 29.5% growth over the prior year. Notably, within the overall feed production mix, the share of pig feed declined from 43.9% in the previous year to 33.5%, while the proportion of poultry feed surged from 41.4% to 50.6%.
III. Production of Feed Additives
Nationwide production of feed additives reached 11.992 million tons, representing an 8.2% increase year-on-year. Specifically, the output of directly produced feed additives was 11.302 million tons, up 7.6% compared to the previous year; meanwhile, mixed-type feed additives amounted to 690,000 tons, marking a robust 20.0% rise. Among these, amino acids, vitamins, and mineral elements saw outputs of 3.3 million tons, 1.27 million tons, and 5.9 million tons, respectively—growing by 10.5%, 14.7%, and 4.1% year-on-year. Additionally, enzyme preparations and microbial formulations continued their rapid growth, with year-on-year increases of 16.6% and 19.3%, respectively.
IV. Intensive Management Practices
There are 621 feed production plants nationwide with a capacity of 100,000 tons or more. , a decrease of 35 companies compared to the previous year; feed production reached 106.597 million tons, up 3.7% year-on-year, accounting for 46.6% of the nation's total feed output—up 3.3 percentage points from the previous year. Nationally, seven production facilities each achieved an annual output exceeding 500,000 tons, one fewer than the previous year, with the largest single plant producing 1.107 million tons. There are 31 feed enterprise groups with an annual production capacity of over 1 million tons. , accounting for 50.5% of the nation's total feed production, including Three corporate groups have annual production exceeding 10 million tons. 。
V. Changes in Regional Layout
Nine provinces across the country produced over 10 million tons of feed, two fewer than the previous year. Ranked by output, they are Shandong, Guangdong, Guangxi, Liaoning, Jiangsu, Hebei, Hubei, Sichuan, and Hunan. Among these, Shandong led with a production volume of 37.789 million tons, representing a 5.9% increase year-on-year. Guangdong, meanwhile, saw its output drop slightly to 29.238 million tons, a decline of 8.3% compared to the prior year. Notably, both Shandong and Guangdong continued to maintain total feed industry outputs exceeding 100 billion yuan, reaching 105.7 billion yuan and 100.9 billion yuan, respectively—though these figures represented year-on-year decreases of 13.1% and 22.6%, respectively. On a national scale, 12 provinces experienced year-on-year growth in feed production, with five western provinces—Guizhou, Yunnan, Gansu, Ningxia, and Xinjiang—showing particularly robust increases, each surpassing a 20% growth rate.
6. Corporate Business Adjustment Status
In 2019, the number of pig feed production plants stood at 5,432, a decrease of 238 compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, the number of poultry feed plants rose to 4,848, an increase of 313 from the prior year. Additionally, facilities producing ruminant and pet feed grew by 68 and 38, respectively, compared to the previous year. Nationwide, the total volume of bulk feed reached 44.143 million tons, representing a year-on-year growth of 5.4%. Bulk feed accounted for 19.3% of the country’s total feed production, up 1.7 percentage points from the previous year.

In 2018, China had nearly 10,000 processing enterprises specializing in compound feed, concentrated feed, refined feed supplements, and additive premixes, while around 1,800 companies produced feed additives. These products cater to all livestock species, and virtually all types of feed additives have now been fully localized. In terms of feed production by animal type in 2018: pig feed accounted for 97.2 million tons, or 42.7%; layer feed reached 29.84 million tons, representing 13.1%; broiler feed totaled 65.09 million tons, making up 28.6%; aquaculture feed amounted to 22.11 million tons, or 9.7%; ruminant feed stood at 10.04 million tons, accounting for 4.4%; and other categories combined for 3.6 million tons, or 1.6%. By product type, compound feed dominated with 205.29 million tons, constituting 90.1% of total production, followed by concentrated feed at 16.06 million tons (7.0%) and additive premixes at 6.53 million tons (2.9%).
