What could be harder than a stone—or softer than water? Yet soft water eventually wears away even hard rock, simply by persevering.

A young man walked into Microsoft to apply for a job—despite the fact that the company hadn’t even placed a recruitment ad. Seeing the puzzled expression on the general manager’s face, the young man awkwardly explained in slightly clumsy English that he’d just happened to wander by and decided to pop in unexpectedly. Intrigued by this unusual approach, the general manager decided to give him a chance—and surprisingly, the interview ended up being a complete surprise: the young man performed terribly. When asked for an explanation, he sheepishly admitted he hadn’t prepared at all. At first, the general manager suspected he was just making up an excuse to save face, but then he chuckled and casually replied, "Well, come back and try again when you’re ready."

A week later, the young man walked through Microsoft’s doors once again—but this time, he still didn’t succeed. Yet compared to his first attempt, his performance was far better. And as before, the general manager gave him the same reply: "Come back when you’re ready." Over the next few months, the young man made five more visits to Microsoft, each time demonstrating improved skills and determination. Eventually, the company decided to hire him—making him one of their key talent development candidates.
